Master Bedroom Progress

So, if you didn't keel over from fits of seizures or succumb to a heart attack after reading it, remember a week or so ago when I got up the courage to fess up to my dirty little secret to all of Blogland?  How could you forget, right?  You're probably still poppin' pills just thinking about it.

Well, I've made some progress and I wanted to share it with you lest you lose all faith in my housekeeping/decorating abilities.  It's no where near picture perfect yet, still lots to be done, but it's looking SO much better!

First up, I was browsing Pinterest one day and came across this picture and it was instant inspiration!

(source)

We had already moved my old wooden ladder upstairs because Little Man had knocked it over for a 2nd time and this time it caught him on the lip.  Not too safe.  So it had been just randomly hanging out in our room.  And I knew where I could get a clamp light - from Hubby's corner of the garage.  : )

So here's my version.

And I must tell you, I. am. in. love.  It's muy perfecto.

I hung a photo of Hubster and I at the top.  I came up with this little twine hammock thing to hang it in because I couldn't figure out how else to hang it without having to attach hardware of some kind (pure laziness basically).

I dug out this little reproduction flour sack tablecloth from storage to hang beside Hubby's work light.  (I thought for sure he would think I was nuts, but he just chuckled and said he might need to borrow it back sometimes.  I love that man.)

I needed some way to keep magazines/books and my lotion beside the bed so I wedged an old bicycle basket in there and it works perfectly.

So.....

I've made more progress than just that so, while you're here, let's check that out too.

Just a quick reminder of the "before."

(Explanation behind this mess can be found here)

And here's the after...well so far anyways.

I had been looking for a room divider of some sort for the entire time we've lived here, but I could never find what I wanted for the right price.  Amazingly, just a few days after I bought the bedding set I found those at a yard sale down the street for $5!

The blue flowered blanket on the end of the bed doesn't match perfectly or anything, but it has special meaning to me.  It was the last thing my grandpa ever gave me before he passed away.  So it's kinda special to me and I like having it there.  It adds a bit of extra color and pattern that keeps things from being too "bed in a bag" feeling.

While I love all the other aspects of this bedding set, the main design of the comforter wasn't my favorite.  It was a bit on the fancy side for my taste.  I think my old quilt tones it down quite nicely while adding the farmhouse feel I love.

I took a close up of the quilted pillows so you can see all the lovely texture.  I think technically the buttons on the sham are actually supposed to be in the back, they're just the closure for keeping the pillow in, but I thought they were adorable and turned them to the front.

I still need to find sheets that go a little bit better.  These were ones I already had from our old bedding set and they'll work for now.  But I'm still on the hunt for something better. (I didn't care for the ones that went with the set and I wasn't spending $75 on sheets I didn't like.)

I moved the suitcase table up here too, and while I like the style of it, that exact suitcase isn't quite right.  I'll be on the look out for something more of the tweed variety I think.  I also still need to find a lamp for his side of the bed.  Still need curtains and rugs too.

The other area that has had a bit of improvement is the dresser.  Let's review the before, shall we?

And after.

It still needs a bit more primping, but it's such an improvement already, dontcha think?  The bread bowl was in the attic (bought from a little street side antique store in St. Augustine, FL several years ago), out of the current rotation of decor downstairs, as was the piece hanging on the wall.  I usually only get it out at Christmas time.  But then I realized it'd be perfect in here.  I may end up making a faux grain sack runner for under the bread bowl, but for now two place mats are looking pretty cute.

I added some twine and an old crusty metal flower tag (found in my yard) to one of the candles to junk-ify it a bit, and filled in around them with dollar store moss.

On the opposite side of the room, the dividers are the e.x.a.c.t. same color as the walls and I needed a way to make them stand out a bit more.  Somewhere I had seen a picture of pallet room dividers that had photos hanging from them and I liked that idea.  So I hung a few on here.

Years ago I read an article that said photos in the master bedroom should be kept solely of the husband and wife.  That way, as you look around your room your focus isn't on family members and what might be going on in their lives, but you're reminded only of you and your spouse and your love for each other.  I've followed that advice ever since and I have to say I think they had a good point.

Curious to know how I attached the pictures on there?

I just flipped the back piece upside down in the frame and slipped the "arm" up inside the slats.  They hold nice and tight and work perfectly.

I moved the stool and plant from the living room up here to fill in this corner.  The red bucket was my husband's grandfather's.  I love it sitting there, but I still want to find a functional use for it.  (Other than holding exercise weights that don't get used very often ever.)

So there you have it, lots of progress has been made.

There's still a lot left to do, because as you may or may not have noticed, I refrained from showing you the rest of the room.

You might be running low on Nitro.  I didn't wanna risk it.

  1. I can't believe you shared your picture hanging secrets! Haha! I guess if it works, then there is no need to change but I'll keep waiting to hear how that picture in the twine hammock came crashing down in the middle of the night.......

Your room is beautiful! You've added the candles in the wood bowl since I saw it. That's a nice romantic touch.

  2. Wow! You don't waste any time! I love the changes you've made. You seem to have a knack for being at the right place at the right time to score great bargains. (Is it a good thing or a bad thing to be going to Springfield with you?) :) Kidding, of course. I'm hoping your 'good luck' rubs off on me. :)

  3. It looks GREAT! and I love the blue blanket - for it's sentimental value and the fact the it isn't "matchy-matchy" adds to the room - in my opinion anyway :) Can't wait to see the rest! :)

  4. Your room looks great! Have you thought of adding more blue in the room to tie in with blanket? It looks fine the way it is, but some more blue might balance things out a bit. very clever hanging technique, too.

    1. There actually is a bit of blue in the milk can on Hubby's side of the bed, but I might see about incorporating a bit more. I just want to be careful not to go too "red, white, and blue."

Thanks for stopping by and commenting!

  7. Your bedroom is looking amazing - so pretty and cozy. I love that there are stories behind the pieces. That makes it feel even more intimate. I actually think the pop of blue from the blanket works, especially since it's a stand-out sentimental piece - I wouldn't stress too much about it. And I think the bicycle basket and room divider are genius! Awesome!

I am so thankful to find someone who isn't always showing white and burlap and junk and more white....AND you are actually showing me some RED (my fav) and not only showing cute things, but telling me how to make them.
Thank you so much for the time and effort that you put into your blog! I can't be a follower because I only have public internet access, but you can bet your boots, I will be around to see all of your exploits.
    Blessings to you,

  12. What a beautiful, colorful room. I love red, too, and have been looking of ways to incorporate it into my home. Some of your pics look like the headboard has a red tint to it. Is that true to life or just the way the photo makes it look?
