Repurposed Ribbon Spool

Sometime in the weeks before Christmas I saw a picture in one magazine or another that inspired this project.  In one of the scenes there were little decorative boxes in a vignette that looked like they used to be ribbon spools.  I wondered if I could use a similar idea only turn them into gift boxes.
Well, I never got around to trying it out at Christmas, so instead I gave them a Valentine's twist.

I'm sure plenty of you crafters and sewing gurus go through lots of these spools.  Well, I'm here to tell ya, don't throw them away!

Carefully remove the top circle from the "base."

Cut out circles to match the size of your spool.  I did 3 circles, one for the bottom of the box and one for each side of the top piece.

1. Using a coordinating paper, measure the inner portion of the spool.
2. Cut it in a nice straight line.
3. Put a layer of Mod Podge on the surfaces.
4. Place your paper and smooth out any wrinkles (I used my daughter's mini-rolling pin).
5. Once the under layer of glue dries, add a layer over the top.

Place your goodies inside, secure the lid with some cute twine or ribbon, and that's it!

It's the perfect size for a handful of "kisses" or even a couple of cookies.

The beauty of it is, they can be made for absolutely any holiday, occasion, or even non-occasion.
It would be fun to fill one with candy just to brighten up someone's day with an unexpected gift.

And you know what else?
The circle portions of the spool make really great coasters once they have a couple of layers of Mod Podge on them!

  7. That is so sweet!
We don't give gifts for Valentine's Day in Australia. Well, we do to our 'beloved' but not to friends or family as you guys do. I'm sure whoever gets those candies in the pretty packaging will not be disappointed. xx
